A rich Heritage
Founded in 1944, Denford began life supplying devices, such as metal and wood lathes, that were marketed under the Viceroy name and developed specifically for use in education.
As the decades moved on and technology progressed, digitisation transformed the world – and engineering was no exception. Computers became an integral part of design and manufacturing processes, and Denford embraced this new development.
In the 1980s they launched the first ever CNC training lathe, and soon expanded this into a range of routers and milling machines specifically aimed at the education sector, where they enabled students to design and manufacture 3D products.
These machines have continued to be a core part of their product portfolio to this day, and play a crucial role in the engineering and manufacturing elements of STEM Racing.
Founding STEM Racing in 2000
Conceived by Denford CEO - Andrew Denford - in 2000, STEM Racing was designed to give teachers and students a hands-on, engaging way to bring design and manufacturing to life.
Starting as a small project in Yorkshire, UK, over the following two decades it grew into a global initiative that enables young people to develop engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving skills - all while experiencing the excitement of real-world STEM challenges.
Along the way, STEM Racing has remained true to its founding ethos: to make STEM education accessible, exciting, and relevant. Today, the programme spans multiple continents, reaching tens of thousands of schools, and continues to inspire the engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers of tomorrow.

A commitment to innovation
Home to a team of expert engineers, Denford continuously develops products that empower STEM Racing students to push the boundaries of design, engineering, and performance.
Most recently, at the Aramco STEM Racing World Finals 2025, Denford unveiled its four-lane racetrack, ushering in a new era of racing. Carefully engineered and rigorously tested, the track underwent extensive trials at Denford’s manufacturing facility to ensure millisecond-accurate performance. The result? 442 flawless, high-speed races in Singapore, delivering double the action in half the time and keeping the event on track from start to finish.
