STEM Racing Discovery

An all-in-one classroom project that is suitable from age 6+, STEM Racing Discovery introduces students to the principles of design, test, make and race with an engaging and interactive programme of work.

an all-in-one project

With everything you need to run the programme encased in one easy-to-store box, STEM Racing Discovery is your one-stop-shop for an engaging classroom STEM activity.

units of work

With six Units of Work containing teacher notes and pupil worksheets, this carefully planned project contains everything you need to teach the course, without requiring hours of preparation.

A Classroom Activity

Developed for the classroom, STEM Racing Discovery can be taught at your own pace - either as part of your curriculum, a summer school project, or after-school club.

Developed for students of all ages, STEM Racing Discovery can be tailored to pupils’ capabilities and understanding. From its most simple implementation, it is a design, build and race project, whilst at its most advanced, it requires students to assess aerodynamics, monitor propulsion speed, and implement project management matrix.

how does It work?

An engaging hands-on activity that teaches pupils to apply STEM principles in a fun, practical way.

Working individually, in pairs, or in small teams, pupils design, make, test, and race their own model cars on a 10-metre track. The project encourages problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking while developing skills in design, technology, science, and maths.

The process begins with each pupil folding a pre-stamped chassis net to create a standard 3D racing car with wheels and axles. Students then research and design their own body shell, testing and refining their ideas to improve aerodynamics and performance using the provided launch system and roll-out race track.

What’s Involved

  • Teams fold a chassis net to make a standard 3D racing car with wheels and axles

  • They design and make a body shell to create their own individualised racing car

  • They race the cars down a roll-out track, learning how to analyse and improve its performance

  • Students work their way through eight Units of Work, learning the importance of everything from teamwork through to project principles

Equipment & Software

  • STEM Racing Discovery Box (this contains everything a class of up to 50 students needs to design, make, test and race a car)

  • Replacement car kits can also be purchased separately

Easy-to-use equipment

STEM Racing Discovery includes all the equipment and resources you need to run an exciting, hands-on learning project with ease.

A roll-out race track sets up in moments, and a foot-powered air pump provides a fun and sustainable way to launch the cars. Pupils use pre-cut paper chassis, wheels, and axles to build their own designs - meaning there’s no need to print, prepare materials, or set up additional stations.

Everything is ready to go, allowing you to focus on teaching and enjoying the learning experience as pupils design, make, test, and race their creations.
