“In 2016 a brilliant teacher of mine at school, Mr Harvey, suggested to a few students that we start an F1 in Schools team to compete in the Regional Finals. In our first year our aim was very much to simply compete, but after going to our first competition, were we finished somewhere in the middle, we really wanted to come back the next year and try to win.”

“In the years after our first Regional Finals event, we managed to progress further through the competition - first to the UK National Finals and, eventually, in 2019, the World Finals where my team, Evolve UK, became World Champions! With each step of the challenge, I became more passionate, developing a love of learning from the performance, concepts and delivery of our team and competitors.”

lEARNING KEY SKILLS
“So many of the design process skills I have used in university projects, such as the IMechE Design Challenge and Shell
Eco-marathon, and now in my role at Red Bull Powertrains, were first learnt from the process of F1 in Schools. From sketching out ideas, to building them in computer models, all the while with consideration with how it would be manufactured, are skill I use daily.
Possibly the most important skill I learnt though was the ability to communicate my design ideas with confidence to team members, judging panels, and potential sponsors whilst learning from their feedback. This skill has been incredibly useful to me throughout my life since competing.”

PURSUING OPPORTUNITIES
“STEM Racing looks great on UCAS personal statements and CVs for job applications, but it is really the skills the competition equips you with that help you to stand out.
At university I found that myself and other students that had experience in engineering competitions like STEM Racing were far more prepared for university engineering competitions, such as Formula Student and Shell Eco-marathon. From this I was able to grab many more opportunities at university than I might have otherwise done so, and from that learn even more. All these factors helped considerably when applying for placements at Formula One teams.”
